Full Biography

Lee Taylor is a singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, actor, and artist based in Brooklyn, NY. Raised in the South, Taylor's musical education began early. They started teaching private oboe lessons at 13 and were singing in local clubs as a teenager, crediting public school music programs for their start. Their sound draws on blues and jazz, delivered with the kind of grit that comes from years of paying dues on real stages rather than algorithms.

Early Career and Memphis

Taylor's songwriting career began in an unlikely place. Producer Young Tre asked them to write a chorus for Mack 10 of Westside Connection, and after hearing it, brought Taylor in as a studio musician. In 2008, Taylor moved to Memphis, where they were mentored by blues legend Miss Di Anne Price and Lester Snell, former musical director for Isaac Hayes. During this period, Taylor performed regularly at Mollie Fontaine Lounge, Itta Bena, and The Hunt Phelan, and worked with Ballet Memphis on two consecutive Interiorworks productions, including composing music for Riverworks 2 alongside Snell.

New York City

Taylor relocated to New York City in 2015, expanding their reach both in the U.S. and internationally, with tours through Slovenia, France, Italy, and the Czech Republic. In 2019, Taylor toured Australia with the Strut N Fret circus. They've performed as a soloist at venues including The Blue Note and Lincoln Center, and today perform regularly with their jazz band at The Django. Taylor is a longtime member of the Resistance Revival Chorus, performing with the group at Carnegie Hall, Pioneer Works, and on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. Their original song "Wild Womxn Pu$$y Power" was included on the Chorus's debut album, This Joy, released on Ani DiFranco's Righteous Babe Records.

Wild Woman

Taylor's debut release, Wild Woman, is a live album capturing a single night at The HiFi Loft in Brooklyn in 2019. The album was recorded with members of The Dap-Kings and Mark Ronson's studio band, and co-produced by Taylor and Binky Griptite. It was pressed as a limited edition double vinyl, 45 RPM release. The accompanying music video, shot entirely on iPhone on a shoestring budget during the pandemic and directed by Michelle Cameron, became a finalist at the Moment International Film Festival.

Activism and Community

Taylor's work extends well beyond music. They are mentored by Indigenous activist Sharon Day and performed with her group, the Neeconis Women Singers, at Honor the Earth in 2014. Taylor participates in Nibi Walks, an Indigenous led water ceremony, and has walked parts of the Mississippi, Ohio, Missouri, and James and Wisconsin Rivers, as well as the Line 3 water ceremony.

Taylor was an early member of Dyke Bar Takeover, an activist charity group founded by Alana Intelegia in Brooklyn, and served on its board for over four years. 

Acting, Drag, and Visual Art

As an actor, Taylor appeared in Amerinda's 2022 production of The Trojan Women, A Native American Adaptation. As a drag king, Lawrence of Labia, they've performed at Mastercard HQ, Stonewall, Rutherford Pride in New Jersey, The Cell Theatre, Cake Boys at 3 Dollar Bill, House of Yes, and Brooklyn Art Haus, among many other venues. As a visual artist, their sculpture "Period Piece" was exhibited for two months at Nails Salon in 2024.

What's Next

This December, Taylor releases "St. Nick at Christmastime," a single reviving the true story of St. Nicholas of Myra, a bishop from the 4th century who quietly gave away his fortune to families in need. The song reimagines that anonymous generosity as a romantic ideal. The track was co-produced by Taylor and Vince Chiarito, a Grammy nominated producer known for his work with Jalen Ngonda, Kali Uchis, and Black Pumas, at his Brooklyn studio V&M Recording. All streaming proceeds benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital as part of Taylor's fundraising campaign with Team Strong as Gold.

The single arrives ahead of “Joy in an Ugly World”, out spring 2027. It's Taylor's first studio album and first full length foray into jazz. Recorded with a quartet of vocals, guitar, bass, and drums, the record centers on an original title composition and explores what Taylor calls melancholy happiness, the bittersweet work of choosing joy in an uncertain world. Original songs sit alongside reimagined classics from Frank Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr., and Louis Prima, plus contemporary influences like Manu Chao.
